MĀORI MUSIC AWARDS CATEGORIES
OPEN SECTION Best Māori Traditional Album (Te Reo Māori) Solo Artists and groups are eligible. Only album recordings released within the period July 2009 to June 2010 are eligible. Artists working primarily within the traditional genre are eligible. The main criteria, is that the music & lyrics reflect the unique Māori identity. Traditional Albums must be in Te Reo Māori.
Best Māori Urban RAP/Hip Hop/RnB Album Solo Artists and groups are eligible. Only album recordings released within the period July 2009 to June 2010 are eligible. Artists working primarily within the urban genre of RAP, hip hop and RnB are eligible. If the label refers to an individual, and a band, the nominee must advise whether the act is to be deemed a group or a solo act for the awards. Albums can be in Te Reo Māori, bi-lingual or English.
Best Māori Urban Roots Album
Solo Artists and groups are eligible. Only album recordings released within the period July 2009 to June 2010 are eligible. Artists working primarily within the urban genre of Reggae are eligible. If the label refers to an individual, and a band, the nominee must advise whether the act is to be deemed a group or a solo act for the awards. Albums can be in Te Reo Māori, bi-lingual or English.
Best Māori Pop Album Solo Artists and groups are eligible provided they have had recordings released during the period July 2009 to June 2010. Artists working primarily within the genre of Pop, Country, Rock’n’Roll & Classical Pop fusion are eligible. If the label refers to an individual and a band, the nominee must advise whether the act is to be deemed a group or a solo act for the awards. Albums can be in Te Reo Māori, bi-lingual or English.
Best Māori Male or Female Solo Artist Album and single recordings by a writer, composer or performer in the traditional or contemporary genre are eligible. Recordings released during the period July 2009 to June 2010 are eligible. If the name on the label is that of a band with no indication of any individual name, then such artists will not be considered a solo artist. If the label refers to an individual and a band, the nominator or nominee must advise whether the act is to be deemed a group or solo act for the awards.
Best Māori Song All recordings are eligible, provided they have been commercially released between July 2009 to June 2010. Songs released by solo artist’s or group’s that has been composed by an eligible songwriter or songwriters are eligible. Nominations must be in respect of an individual song. Artists working primarily in, but not limited to, the Māori genre of music are eligible. Song can be in Te Reo Māori, bi-lingual or English.
Best Māori Songwriter Best Māori Songwriter is based on a body of work (at least three songs) in Te Reo Māori or English language.
Radio Airplay Record of the Year by a Māori Artist in Te Reo Māori sponsored by Te Whakaruruhau o ngā Reo Irirangi o Aotearoa
Radio Airplay Record of the Year by a Māori Artist sponsored by NZ on Air
NOMINATED SECTION Keeper of Traditions Award This is an individual, who is or has been dedicated to the teaching of Māori culture in music.
Lifetime Contribution to Māori Music Award This is an individual who has dedicated a large part of their life and career to the promotion and development of Māori music in contemporary or traditional styles.
Music Industry Award An individual, Māori or non-Māori, who is or has been active in the New Zealand music industry (i.e. in production, promotion, operations, management, etc.) who has, through their dedication to Māori music, made or presently makes a positive impact on Māori music.
Iconic Māori Music Composers Award – Historical This is an individual that has composed a body of work in Te Reo Māori, from traditional & historical teachings in contemporary or traditional styles that has impacted on the development of Māori Music.
